Where the "poly is for good players" myth comes from

The idea rests on three real observations that get misread. First, professionals play poly almost universally, so by imitation poly became a badge of standard. Second, poly genuinely requires racquet head speed: without a fast, upward swing capable of moving the mains and letting them snap back, polyester never "works" โ€” it just sits there being stiff and harsh. Third, poly can hurt your arm when it is strung too tight, which is exactly what amateurs do when they carry their multifilament tension straight over.

The question is not "am I good enough for poly?" It is "does my game make poly work, and can my arm take it?"

The industry adapted to poly becoming the norm. It did not make poly the reward for reaching a level.

The other side: comfort advocates, and who pays them

Not every expert lands in the same place, and that is worth hearing. Plenty of well-followed coaches and content creators argue for multifilament, emphasising comfort and injury prevention. That argument is real and important, especially for sensitive arms โ€” nothing in this article softens it.

One nuance deserves to stay in view: some of those voices are brand ambassadors, often for multifilament manufacturers. Tecnifibre, the world leader in multifilament, claims โ€” study in hand โ€” that one of its multifilaments fatigues the arm around 22% less than a polyester. There is nothing illegitimate about that, but it is a good reason to judge each piece of advice on its merits rather than on the profile of whoever is giving it. For a heavy hitter with a healthy arm and a fast swing, the extra comfort of multi is usually paid for in control and spin. Only you can weigh that trade against your own body and your own game.

(In the French ranking system, where this debate is usually framed, that is roughly the stretch from 30/1 up to 15/2.) At those levels you control zones and tempo, and you generally have enough racquet head speed to make a polyester work. The idea that poly would be "too much" for you does not hold: what matters is your swing and your arm, not the rung you occupy.

A story that circulates on player forums illustrates the opposite trap perfectly. A strong club player with a flat game and variations tries a demo racquet strung with a thin poly (1.24 mm) at around 53โ€“55 lbs (24โ€“25 kg). The feel is exceptional: control, power, comfort. He buys the frame, has it strung with his usual multifilament โ€” and loses everything. He cannot generate spin, and the ball has neither power nor depth. The racquet had nothing to do with it. If you dislike multifilament, you are probably living the same experiment in reverse.

The explanation is mechanical. A flat game with variations needs a predictable, directional bed with a low launch angle. Multifilament returns a lot of energy and sends the ball up and out, which produces exactly the long balls and vague placement that frustrate this player. Poly pins the ball down and hands the trajectory back to you, while still offering the snapback your heavier topspin drives need.

For a player in that band who dislikes multi, polyester is not merely permitted โ€” it is probably the right answer. The one real reason to stay away is arm pain, and that is a health question, not a level question.

Softening poly without giving up control

If poly tempts you but the arm worries you, several levers exist before you abandon the control it gives.

Tension: the number one amateur mistake

Instead of consulting your ranking, answer these three honestly.

  1. Do I break strings often?

  2. Is my swing fast and upward?
    Yes โ†’ you will exploit poly's snapback and spin. No โ†’ poly will never "work"; it will just feel stiff, and multi will give you far more return.

Tick "breaks strings + fast swing + healthy arm" and polyester is right for you, whatever your rating says. If pain appears, that โ€” not your level โ€” is what should push you back toward softness.
